Stiftsrundgang Borghorst (Freiweltliches Damenstift)

During the guided tour of Borghorst Abbey, you will learn about the more than 1100-year-old history of the abbey. Founded in the Ottonian period by the noblewoman Bertha in 968, the monastery was initially closely linked to the imperial dynasty and subordinate to the diocese of Magdeburg. The monastery cross donated by the Ottonians in particular bears witness to this close relationship. This cross has survived wars and raids and was even the focus of a criminal case in more recent times. The monastery later became an important place of residence for ladies from the Westphalian, especially Münsterland, nobility and existed until the main Imperial Deputation in Napoleonic times in 1806. The tour shows the development of the former monastery into the later village or town of Borghorst.
